South Sudan: Integrated Needs Tracking & Shocks Monitoring Index Factsheet, January 2021 Format Overview & Methodology This factsheet presents findings from the Integrated Needs Tracking (INT) system and the Shocks Monitoring Index (SMI) developed by REACH South Sudan. Integrated Needs Tracking (INT) The Integrated Needs Tracking (INT) system provides a monthly overview of emerging and ongoing intersectoral needs at the county level in South Sudan, in order to facilitate evidence-based decision-making. To do so, it draws from multiple up-to-date sources of data from the four emergency sectors: Food Security & Livelihoods (FSL), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Health, and Nutrition, as shown in Figure 1.

As a result of the continued insecurity and overall unpredictability of a sudden increase in humanitarian needs, it is becoming increasingly important to quickly identify and fill information gaps relating to potential areas of severe humanitarian distress. Further, identifying the level of needs must be done in a systematic and timely manner to promote more effective humanitarian analysis, comparability, response and planning for immediate life-saving activities.

BACKGROUND ON IMPACT AND REACH IMPACT Initiatives is a humanitarian NGO, based in Geneva, Switzerland. The organisation manages several initiatives, including the REACH Initiative. The IMPACT team comprises specialists in data collection, management and analysis, GIS and remote-sensing. IMPACT was launched at the initiative of ACTED, an international NGO whose headquarter is based in Paris and is present in thirty countries. The two organizations have a strong complementarity formalized in a global partnership, which allows particularly IMPACT to benefit from ACTED’s operational support on its fields of intervention. REACH was born in 2010 as a joint initiative of two International NGOs (IMPACT Initiatives and ACTED) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT).
