Lexi Donarski invited to 2021 U-19 World Cup team trials

Aquinas alum and Iowa State guard Lexi Donarski has received an invitation to the 2021 USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Cup Team trials, per an official announcement.
The USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Selection Committee sent invitations to 27 athletes across the country. Donarski and the others will compete for one of 12 roster spots for Team USA in the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup in Hungary this August.
The team trials will be May 14-16 at Metro State University in Denver.
Donarski was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year after averaging 13 points a game for the Cyclones. She shot over 40 percent from the field and over 41 percent from three-point range.

Cori Close, who was an assistant coach for a pair of gold-medal winning USA Basketball teams, has been selected to serve as the 2021 USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Cup Team head coach. College head coaches
Aaron Johnston from South Dakota State University and
Joni Taylor from the University of Georgia, both of whom will coach internationally for the first time with USA Basketball, round out the coaching staff as 2021 USA U19 assistant coaches. Trials to select the 12-member team will be held May 14-16 at Metro State University in Denver, and trials invitees will be announced at a later date.

Haley Jones for this week’s USA Basketball Women’s AmeriCup Team trials at Columbia, South Carolina. Barnes is an assistant on
Dawn Staley’s USA staff, along with
Jennifer Rizzotti, USA Women’s National Team assistant coach and Connecticut Sun president.
After all, it would have been easy for Barnes to say yes after Jones led Stanford to a 54-53 victory over Arizona in the national championship game two weeks ago.
“Nahhh,” Barnes said with a laugh. “I’m actually glad I get to coach her instead of coaching against her. She’s a really good player.”

With the depth and balance the Stanford women’s basketball team had this season, it could be easy to overlook the star quality of certain players.
But when the Cardinal made it to the Final Four, the ball seemed to find its way into the hands of
Haley Jones and she more than met the moment.
First Jones hit the go-ahead jumper with 32 seconds left in Stanford’s 66-65 win over South Carolina in the national semifinals. Then she scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 54-53 victory over Arizona to give the Cardinal their first national championship since 1992. Jones was named the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, as much for her 41 points in the two Final Four games as for her calm leadership on the floor.

Her dad played collegiately at Wake Forest and professionally in Germany. But, basketball wasn’t the focus for
Elizabeth Kitley until her sophomore year at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro, North Carolina. Instead, she thought her path to a college scholarship would be in softball or maybe even volleyball.
But as it became clear to her that those options might not be ideal, Kitley began to blossom on the basketball court.
Coming off a sophomore season at Virginia Tech in which she averaged 18.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, it looks like her future in hoops could be very bright. The 6-foot-5 center’s stock steadily has risen in the past four years to the point where she was one of 20 players invited to the USA Basketball Women’s AmeriCup Team trials. It is Kitley’s first USA Basketball experience.
