ABC 10/CW5 Portage Health Foundation supports the Copper Country services that better the communities’ health. Their mission statement is simple; “ to positively influence a healthier community through enhanced philanthropy and collaboration.” A lot of Michigan Volunteer Emergency Medical Services need more money to train and equip their EMS volunteers. PHF can provide these firefighters and first responders with grants to get the resources they need. Portage Health Foundation’s (PHF) mission is to positively influence a healthier community through enhanced philanthropy and collaboration. In order to uphold this mission, PHF has identified seven areas of targeted emphasis addressing the following (in no order of importance or preference):

Jennifer Jenich-Laplander LAURIUM Residents of Iron and Ontonagon Counties and their surrounding area no longer need to travel to receive women’s health services. Aspirus Health expanded access to these important services to meet the growing needs of patients. Certified Nurse Midwife Allison Harr, DNP, CNM, is now seeing patients at Aspirus Iron River and Aspirus Ontonagon. “We are excited to offer the highest levels of specialty care close to home,” said Rhonda Buckallew, director of clinics for Aspirus. “Women’s Health is very important for women of all ages, and now they have much quicker access to care no matter what age or stage they might be going through.”

Copper Country Mental Health Services Institute HOUGHTON The Rice Memorial Clinic Foundation is pleased to announce that Community Mental Health Careers Scholarship Awards are available again this year. The Foundation established the program in 1992 to promote careers in professions related to Community Mental Health. A $600 scholarship is available to a graduating senior from each of the 13 high schools in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon Counties, the area served by Copper Country Mental Health Services Board. The $600 scholarship may be available to the recipient for each year of their undergraduate education, up to a maximum of $2,400, as long as they remain in an accepted program of study.

Health Department Offers Annual Fee Discount for Compliant Food Establishments

ABC 10/CW5 Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon Counties, MI – At it’s regular Board of Health meeting on Monday, January 25, the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department (WUPHD) voted in a one-time annual license fee discount for food service establishments that have consistently complied with Michigan’s Epidemic Orders. The twenty-five percent discount will apply to local annual inspection fees only and not the state license fee. “The Board wanted to recognize the facilities in our jurisdiction that have worked hard over the last few months to help keep our communities safe”, said Kate Beer, Health Officer for WUPHD. “The discount

The vaccine supply coming to the area continues to be very limited at this time.
