Owner Odyssey Entertainment announced Friday the theater would closed at the end of business on Sunday because it could not come to a new lease agreement with the property owner, Hy-Vee. “Austin has been a great community to do business in” says Steve Tripp, President of Odyssey Theatres. “We have incurred substantial losses there in the last year alone and just simply can not continue to do so” Odyssey says it wishes to thank its loyal patrons in Austin over the past 20 years and anyone holding passes or gift cards can still use them at the CineMagic Hollywood 12 Theatres in Rochester.

A Terrific 2020: Blockbuster theater news is great for movie lovers

Two new luxury cinemas made progress this year, with one recently opening. Golden Ticket Cinemas, located in Uptown Aberdeen, formerly known as the Aberdeen Mall, opened Dec. 18, and showed Christmas classics and with newer films for $5 a ticket. The response was excellent, according to a mall official. Golden Ticket boasts nine auditoriums, though currently only five of them are open due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Golden Ticket Cinemas has upgraded sound systems, menus and luxury recliners. “(Recliners) are the biggest difference. We did some cosmetic changes as well, a few little bells and whistles,” Golden Ticket Cinemas President John Bloemeke said.
