Move to promote Black history using Confederate tax fails in Legislature
View Comments
Legislators vow to reintroduce a bill to preserve and promote Black history in Alabama using proceeds from a tax that once supported Confederate veteran pensions in special session after it failed to pass this legislative term, which ended Monday.
And while most of the millions of dollars in revenue generated from the tax funds things such as schools and pensions, a portion of the tax 1% funds operations of the Confederate Memorial Park, site of the old soldiers home.
State Sens. Clyde Chambliss, R- Prattville and Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, sponsored the bill that would have preserved the funding for the park. The legislation would also set aside 1% from the tax collection to preserve and promote Black history.

By the year 2040, Alabama will have some 5.319 million residents, an increase of more than 11% from its population in 2010.
Some Alabama counties will see a much higher rate of growth by that year, according to projections from the Culverhouse School of Business Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama. Using Census data, the center has projected the rate of population growth for each Alabama county for the span of time from 2010 to 2040.
