Gabriel announces new panel to advise on ERA shake-up
European Commission calls in experts to help revamp the 20-year-old plan to coordinate national R&D policies and create a single market for research

The European Commission has set up an expert group to design the governance structure for the European Research Area (ERA), the EU’s planned single market for research.
The European Research Area Forum for Transition, “is focusing on designing the new ERA governance and tries to translate it into a simple message,” said Mariya Gabriel, EU commissioner for research and innovation.

Wissenschaftsrat (Council of Science and Humanities or CSH) has issued a policy paper pointing to weaknesses in the country’s higher education and research system which have been highlighted by the coronavirus crisis, and has urgently recommended remedial measures in 10 problematic fields.
Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic as a “historic watershed”, the CSH mentions opportunities to “initiate a fundamental resetting of the higher education and research system” and even “prospects for societal change” as a result of the pandemic having “shaken many certainties”.
The CSH acts as an advisory body to the federal and state governments, making recommendations on the development of higher education and research. It was negotiated in difficult conditions, with more uncertainties than usual, arising from the COVID pandemics that is hitting hard our societies and our economies, but also from the UK leaving the Union.
