Collin David Emerson, 77, of Temperance, Mich., formerly of Brooklyn, Mich., died peacefully in his sleep and in his home, on January 13, 2021, following a long illness. Collin was born on May 1, 1943, in Addison, Mich., to Arlo and Elizabeth Emerson. When Collin was only two, his father Arlo was killed in action fighting the Nazis in Ardennes. The youngest of four children, he and his siblings were raised by their mother and grandmother, Violet Mellinger, in the quiet countryside outside of Brooklyn, Mich.
Collin spent his childhood fishing and hunting in the woods around his house, developing an abiding connection with nature and wildlife, and counting among his childhood pets everything from a fox to a brown bat.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. San Luis Obispo City Fire conducted a planned burn of vegetation near the Irish Hills open space near Prefumo Canyon Road in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday.
City fire is conducting a planned burn to help reduce threats of wildfire in the area.
“The Irish Hills Open Space presents a significant wildfire threat to the City of San Luis Obispo due to its proximity to homes and businesses and the lack of any significant recorded fire history,” said San Luis Obispo Fire Chief Keith Aggson. “The fuel, or vegetation, density in this area had long remained unchecked until the recent grant-funded fuel break work that was completed under the direction of the SLO County Fire Safe Council utilizing grant funding provided by the State.”

Jan. 26 Under bright blue skies Tuesday, residents across San Luis Obispo County prepared for a major winter storm to hit the the Central Coast on Wednesday, bringing up to a foot of rain, high winds and potential flooding and power outages.
Rain and gusting winds are expected to hit the county starting early Wednesday morning and continuing through Thursday, said John Lindsey, PG&E meteorologist, in his Tuesday forecast. Other forecasts showed rain arriving as early as Tuesday night.
Lindsey projects the county will receive at least 6 to 10 inches of rain, with gusting winds that could reach 70 mph.

San Luis Obispo City Fire plans to burn dozens of brush piles in and near the Irish Hills Open Space off Prefumo Canyon Road on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Burning is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Firefighters say the prescribed burn will help reduce the threat and severity of wildfire in the area and aid in restoring natural ecosystem processes.
The piles contain French Broom, an invasive non-native plant that firefighters say can create a highly flammable fuel and greatly increases the fire danger.
