There are rituals that mark the beginning of every romantic relationship. Questions like where are you from? Where did you go to school? What do you like to eat? Who is your favorite band?
However, perhaps the most important question is, “What’s your ethnic background?” One special-to-me man answered that he was Croatian, German and Czech. He paused, “But, no one knows where my father’s grandfather came from.”
I silently thought of his surname. My first thought was Scots, then I looked at him and immediately thought Viking. To not sound foolish, I said nothing. At that time, I only knew that some people from Norway and Sweden were sailors who may have discovered America.

On my motherâs side, my heritage is Anglo-Saxon farmers who had the courage to leave the only home they ever knew to come to the United States to try and create a better life for themselves.
