Local activists, politicians weigh in on guilty verdict in trial of ex-cop Derek Chauvin in George Floyd s death

This is a developing news story and will be updated as additional information is gathered. A small group of demonstrators gathered at Chestnut and North Prince streets in Lancaster city late Tuesday night, after a Minneapolis jury convicted former police officer Derek Chauvin of murder and manslaughter charges in the death of George Floyd. “Guilty AF,” read the sign held by Jess Mohring, 33. “I think (the verdict) means justice for all Americans, hopefully,” said Mohring, of Lancaster, who took part in social justice protests last year after Floyd’s death. Mohring said they were “hyped” about the verdict when they learned about it at work, and took to the streets shortly after to express their excitement.

Lancaster City Council calls for prompt creation of county health department

Lancaster City Council passed a resolution Tuesday in support of the “prompt” establishment of a Lancaster County department of health. The resolution also requests that the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners initiate a working group to evaluate the idea of a health department and to make recommendations by the end of a year. The resolution passed unanimously with six council members in attendance. Council member Pete Soto was absent. “It’s overdue,” council member Xavier Garcia-Molina said. The Manheim Township Board of Commissioners last month passed a similar resolution, then sent a letter to every school district and municipality in Lancaster County urging them to do the same.

City Council OKs Willow Valley s proposed $90M high-rise in downtown Lancaster

The proposed 20-story Willow Valley Mosaic apartment building in downtown Lancaster won a pair of key city approvals on Tuesday, though several more remain before construction can begin. Lancaster City Council’s 5-2 vote allows developer Willow Valley Living to demolish two existing buildings on the South Queen and West Vine streets property and to build a structure with an appearance as proposed. Council took the advice of the city Historical Commission, which had recommended by a 6-0 vote last month that council approve the two “certificates of appropriateness” for the project, a venture that would create the county’s tallest building and cost more than $90 million. The commission weighed in because the site is in the city’s Heritage Conservation District.
