more »ed @#%& ! Smilers, which the BBC called undeniably beautiful. Of Charmer, her eighth studio album, Mann comments, I m fascinated by charming people and the whole idea of charm. It s hard to remember sometimes that there is usually an agenda behind the act of being charming, and that is what I m most interested in. Is someone s charm being utilized just to try and entertain people, make them feel special and interesting, or is there a more sinister purpose behind it? Sometimes I think charm can just be another word for manipulation. The album also includes a duet with James Mercer of The Shins on Living a Lie. Mann will support the new album with tour dates this fall. See reverse for tracklist.
We continue our look back at the music of 50 years agoâ¦..

Like scotch whiskey or Fellini films, the âmusicâ of Leonard Cohen is an acquired taste. As is the case with his sometimes brilliant, mostly depressing 1971 Lp âSongs Of Love & Hateâ. If you donât deal with depression well, you should probably avoid Cohenâs music anyway.(check out the first track âLast Yearâs Man). And if you donât like poetry put to spare musical arrangements (he called this LP âover-produced)Â and âsungâ in a mostly spoken monotone, this will not be for you. But, if you can get past all that, the words and subject matter might grab you. This is Cohenâs 3rd album and is produced by Bob Johnston (Dylanâs old producer) for Columbia. It also includes a group of backing musicians including Charlie Daniels ( yeah that Charlie Daniels). And, some of the best songs on the record were written years earlier.
Rosie Tucker’s “
Habanero” is a spicy indie morsel with hints of Liz Phair and Aimee Mann sprinkled throughout. Turn up this perfect sing-along companion from a wry LA-based singer-songwriter.

Pearl Jam was still known as Mookie Blaylock. Huh? We didn’t use the Internet for everything (yet), and AOL was king. Google wasn’t even invented until 1998 (though didn’t officially become a verb until 2006); instead, we had Ask Jeeves, Alta Vista, Netscape, Lycos, Earthlink, MindSpring, or Yahoo (among others) to search the mysterious, new World Wide Web.
We also saw the birth of email, or Email, or e-mail, or E-mail; yes, it took a while until we settled on a universally accepted spelling for the abbreviation for electronic mail. AOL Instant Messenger was the first chat-like service to exist in the mainstream and it was life-changing. We could chat friends and make plans to go to happy hour after work right from our work computers without ever picking up the phone. We loved it.
