LLNL Designs, Builds Space Payload in Record Time

When the U.S. Space Forceâs Tactically Responsive Launch-2 (TacRL-2) mission launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base last month it carried a payload designed and built in record time by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). LLNL provided a three-mirror reflective telescope and sensor for the payload, which was designed, integrated, tested, and delivered within four months of the word âgo.â âWe needed a novel design in order to meet the program objectives,â said LLNL project leader John Ganino. âThe payload system required a set of three LLNL monolith optics, auto-focus capability, and an electronic control module to interface with the spacecraft.â

The US military has adopted a new space architecture that aims to harmonise Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) requirements for strategic and tactical missile warning, missile defence and battlespace awareness missions a strategy that spans three agencies and tens of billions of dollars in planned spending. The Overhead Persistent Infrared Enterprise Architecture Strategy, provided by the Pentagon to Congress in late December 2020, aims to address concerns by lawmakers about a lack of consensus inside the US military over an agreed and affordable integrated enterprise space architecture.
