The Charlie Brown: a twist of raised and chocolate donut doughs, swirled with a sugar glaze
With any luck, my quest to try all of the best donut spots in San Diego will never end. But for a moment there, it looked like it might have, and in an unlikely spot. Over on the far side of La Mesa’s Mount Helix, a little shop turns out some of the county’s tastiest donut creations. The place even spells it out on the sign in front: Best Donuts.

Certainly, the most memorable donut spots do something to stand out. Donut Bar makes ‘em extra large. Devil’s Dozen in Little Italy starts with an excellent brioche dough. Nomad Donuts embraces interesting flavors such as ube and lemongrass.

Jesse Robles was appointed Dec. 8 to fill a vacant seat on the board of the San Miguel Consolidated Fire District, the county’s largest fire district.
Robles was one of two people who applied to represent Area 6, the part of East County that covers La Presa and Spring Valley. There were no candidates who filed to run for the seat on the November ballot so the district put out the word to the community that it was soliciting interested persons for that position. Robles and Tyra Fleming were the only respondents. Robles’ seat runs until Dec. 6, 2024.
The 2020 election was the first “by district” election, with four of the seven governing areas set to appear on the ballot. Pomeranz, a senior at San Diego State University, ran uncontested for the seat in area 4 (Casa
The Tubman Twenty is back on track. Elizabeth Cobbs couldn’t be happier.
“This is so long overdue,” the San Diego history professor said as word got out this week that the Biden administration is reviving plans to put 19th century abolitionist Harriet Tubman on the front of a redesigned $20 bill.
Cobbs wasn’t the only one cheered by the news that U.S. paper money will feature a woman for the first time in more than a century, and a Black person for the first time ever.
But few are as well-versed in Tubman’s story as Cobbs is.

A commercial gas line that was apparently broken when someone tried to get inside a business Wednesday morning prompted the evacuation of the Casa de Oro strip mall for several hours as repairs were made.
The incident occurred shortly after 8:10 a.m. at the center on Campo Road near North Granada Avenue in Casa de Oro, the Spring Valley neighborhood north of state Route 94 and south of Mount Helix.
All businesses in the strip mall were evacuated and streets near the center were closed, San Miguel Fire Battalion Chief Justin Fuller told OnScene TV.
A San Diego Gas & Electric spokeswoman said the leak was brought under control just after 10 a.m., and the line was repaired by 11 a.m.
