York children get chance to hear from orangutan expert

SCHOOL children across York have the chance to learn from one of the top orangutan conservationists in the world. The Mount School has invited York schools as well as the UK’s Quaker schools and girls’ schools from across the UK and abroad to join an online talk celebrating 50 years of orangutan conservation with scientist, conservationist and educator Dr Biruté Mary Galdikas. The all-girl Quaker school, is hosting a live online talk with Dr Galdikas who first studied orangutans in the wild in 1971. Dr Galdikas’ expedition was supported by the anthropologist Louis Leakey, who also sponsored Jane Goodall’s research of chimpanzees and Dian Fossey’s study of gorillas; when Dr Galdikas began her study, the three women were dubbed ‘the Trimates’.

Mount School girls club together to build an online community

Learning at The Mount School York continues beyond the classroom, even in virtual times! Mount girls have plenty of opportunities to improve their personal development, learn new skills, challenge themselves, build confidence and have fun through the many co-curricular opportunities on offer. An interesting feature of The Mount’s activities is how many of them are student-led.  Girls have the option to establish clubs and societies when there is something that interests them which is not already featured in our busy programme,” says Jo Atkinson, who co-ordinates The Mount’s busy programme of senior school activities.  “We have many gifted dancers at The Mount. In school they take part in dance clubs, performances and running their own dance classes. During lockdown a Sixth Form student has been running an online dance for the younger girls.
