One hell of a ride : Local drivers conquer the Mountain

Premium Content Subscriber only The Northern Rivers has left its mark on the Mountain over the weekend, with three local drivers climbing onto the podium over the Bathurst 6 Hour weekend. Byron Bay man Shane Smollen, his lifelong friend Rob Rubis , and V8 Supercar driver Shane van Gisbergen  steered Smollen s BMW M4 to victory in the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour held on Sunday, the first race meet for the car. He said it was fantastic to see so many local drivers among the placegetters over the weekend.   Shane Smollen and his teammates Shane van Gisbergen and Rob Rubis won the Bathurst 6 Hour on the weekend.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver combined with Shane Smollen and Rob Rubis to claim the win aboard a Class X BMW M4. The win helped van Gisbergen become just the second driver, after Paul Morris, to win all three major endurance races at Mount Panorama. The #97 leads after the start The 2016 Supercars champion also defeated Tander and Supercars rival Chaz Mostert in the opening Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS on Saturday, before being pipped by Tander on Sunday morning.

Federal Minister considers permanent protection of women s site earmarked for development

The Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley has extended an emergency declaration to protect the site of a proposed go-kart track at Wahluu (Mount Panorama) in Bathurst, New South Wales. Minister Ley originally halted the development for 30 days, and has now extended the protection of the site for another 30 days. Traditional Owners have long expressed concerns over the proposed go-kart track s impact on a sacred women s site. Wiradyuri Elder Mallyan Brian Grant told NITV News in November that the area was highly significant to the local community. The women’s place is sacred. It will always be sacred. If you destroy it, you destroy culture, he said.
