TOKYO, May 21 (Xinhua) Wide swathes of Japan have been pummeled by torrential rain on Friday, the weather agency here said.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), a seasonal front hit western and eastern Japan triggering heavy downpours on Thursday and Friday.
The JMA said in the wake of the downpours, residents must be vigilant for mudslides as the deluge has loosened ground, with residences in low-lying, mountainous areas at particular risk of being hit by potentially fatal landslides.
In May, as Japan s rainy season kicks in, a number of regions have already logged record amounts of rainfall, and the recent downpour resulted from the front becoming active as it clashed with warm, humid air, the weather agency said.

Mount Fuji in Japan
A new hazard map drawn up to prepare local residents for a possible eruption of Japan s Mount Fuji warns that earlier predictions may have underestimated the true scale of the danger.
The updated threat assessment was compiled by experts from the three prefectures considered to be most at risk from a major eruption of Japan s tallest and most iconic mountain. Basing their decisions on new research, officials in Shizuoka, Yamanashi and Kanagawa prefectures now believe that the earlier hazard map, which was published in June 2004, failed to take several factors into account.
