Harlem, New York (77WABC) – The NYPD is actively investigating what led a man to open fire outside of the St. John The Devine Cathedral in Harlem on Sunday afternoon.
Police say they received dozens of 911 calls at around 3:45pm on Sunday afternoon of a male suspect, firing his weapon into the sky, outside of the Cathedral, located between West 110th and West 113th Street on Amsterdam Avenue.
77WABC has learned from authorities the suspect also began shooting towards police officers as they arrived on scene. Witnesses describe chaos unfolding on Amsterdam Avenue, as dozens of pedestrians within the area, screamed in fear and ran to take cover. The NYPD says several witnesses also told detectives the man was yelling “kill me” as he was discharging his weapon.
