During the next few weeks, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service will conduct two major inquiries, contacting nearly 3,800 producers across South Dakota to determine crop acreage and grain stock levels as of June 1, 2021.
“These are two of the most important surveys NASS conducts, due to the widespread and significant impact of their results,” explained Erik Gerlach, South Dakota State Statistician. “When producers complete these surveys, they contribute essential information that determines the expected acreage and supply of major commodities for the 2021 crop year. The results are necessary for everyone who relies on agriculture for their livelihoods. This includes those providing farm and ranch supplies, those purchasing commodities directly from the producers, and everyone else involved in ensuring a safe and affordable food supply reaches the consumer in a timely manner.”

The US Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is conducting the Cash Rents and Leases survey.
The survey provides the basis for estimates of the current year’s cash rents paid for irrigated cropland, non-irrigated cropland, and permanent pasture. Completion of this survey ensures cash rental rates accurately represent your locality,” said NASS’ South Dakota State Statistician Erik Gerlach. “Information from this survey is also used in the Farm Service Agency administration of the Conservation Reserve Program as an alternative soil rental rate prior to finalizing new rates each year.”
