May 10 – Disappointments in Every Reading

John 6:22-42 Proverbs 14:34-35 I Samuel 8:3 – Wasn’t this the issue with Eli’s kids? Sadly this happened to Billy Sunday’s children as well. From Rick Grubbs: “Billy Sunday was the most famous and successful evangelist of the early 1900’s. He was a flamboyant professional baseball player who met Christ at Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago. Within a few years he had formed a very successful crusade team which captured media attention all over the country. He is remembered as a colorful preacher who not only led multitudes to Christ, but also led the fight against ending prohibition. Billy Sunday would be considered a success by almost any standard. Yet he lamented, “The great tragedy of my life is that though I have led thousands to Christ, my own sons are not saved.” Indeed his sons mocked their father’s ministry and were drunks with horrible family lives, one of whom ended his life by suicide. It was the practice of the Sundays to leave their children in the car

These Indiana schools to get the most per student in stimulus funds

Courtesy of Phalen Academies School leaders at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy are dreaming about offering everything from daily small-group tutoring sessions to safer classrooms next year as they start to address the instruction students missed during the pandemic. And, this time, they have the resources to make it happen. The Indiana charter school is expected to receive more than $14,000 per student from the country’s third stimulus package the most of any school in the state. Schools serving high-poverty students, among the campuses hardest hit by COVID-19, will receive the most per student in federal relief. In Indiana, the top five districts and charter schools expected to get the most money per student and many others high on that list are in Gary, where de-industrialization has caused economic decline, population loss, and neglect. For some schools, the federal money could essentially double their typical annual state funding.

May 3 – Ten Shekels and a Shirt

Proverbs 14:20-21 Judges 17:3 – What commandment was violated? Interestingly this commandment was repeated 8 additional times in the Torah. No wonder God told His people to read the Word! (Joshua 1:8, Deuteronomy 17:19, Deuteronomy 29:9). Judges 17:10 – Paris Reidhead preached a famous message on Ten Shekels and a Shirt. Judges 17:13 – Welcome to modern pluralism. We have a house of gods (Judges 17:5), and are glad to add some of Christianity so we don’t offend the LORD of the Bible. Judges 18:20 – A Levite who should know the law is delighted by tribal affinity but not horrified by violating God’s law. Interestingly the next time the word teraphim is used in the Bible is Hosea 3:4 where God compares Gomer’s adultery to the actions of this Levite.

April 30 – Family Tension in Judges

Proverbs 14:13-14 Judges 11:2 – We’ve seen the family tension between Gideon’s concubine’s son and his other sons (Judges 9:5), and now Gilead’s family problems because of his son with a harlot. National success starts with success in the home! Judges 11:14 – Land disputes in the Holy Land… sounds familiar… Deutsch:  Der siegreiche Feldherr Jephta begegnet seiner Tochter (1661) Judges 11:35 – Did Jephthah offer his daughter as a human sacrifice? Tim Chaffey argues that it is unfortunately very likely. Solomon warns against breaking vows (Ecclesiastes 5:4-5). John 1:1 – Was Jesus really God ? Not just a great teacher, but Elohim – the same God that created the World (John 1:3 says yes). Was He the same as YHWH – the covenant making God that made and fulfilled His promises to Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses? A great comprehensive book on this topic is Putting Jesus in His Place: The Case for the Deity of Christ.
