Orthodox Christians marked Palm Sunday in Jerusalem, the beginning of the Holy Week leading up to Orthodox Easter.
The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III attended the vigil in Jerusalem s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the traditional site of Jesus crucifixion and resurrection.
Some faithful wore masks and held palm fronds to symbolise how worshippers greeted Jesus over 2,000 years ago as he triumphantly returned to Jerusalem.
The provision for gatherings come after Israel launched one of the world s most successful vaccination campaigns, allowing it to reopen restaurants, hotels and religious sites.
But air travel is still limited by quarantine and other restrictions, keeping away the foreign pilgrims who usually throng Jerusalem during Holy Week.

Jerusalem Patriarch condemns Israeli settler attack against church in Jerusalem
JERUSALEM, Friday, February 5, 2021 (WAFA) – The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III today condemned the attack committed by an Israeli extremist against the Romanian Orthodox Church in Jerusalem about three days ago.
A statement issued today by the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem expressed the condemnation and warned that “Israeli extremists’ attacks against churches and mosques in Jerusalem are alarmingly on the rise, and the failure of Israeli official authorities to deal with them and their tolerance towards such terrorist acts will definitely lead to more fueling of the conflict in the Holy City, and will keep it further away from achieving peace and stability.”

On Tuesday, December 9/22, 2020, the Patriarchate celebrated the feast of Saint Anna’s conception. On this feast the Church commemorates that the noble couple Joachim and Anna, being childless, entreated God to give them a child, and God granted their request, by giving them Mary. Keeping their promise to God, they offered Mary to the Temple of Solomon at her third year of age, and our Lord Jesus Christ was born from her, through the Holy Spirit.
This event was celebrated by the Patriarchate at Joachim and Anna’s house, next to the Sheep’s pool, before Saint Stephen’s Gate, inside the wall of Jerusalem. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the Master of Ceremonies Archimandrite Bartholomew, and the chanting was delivered by His Eminence Metropolitan Joachim of Helenoupolis.

On Friday, December 5/18, 2020, the Patriarchate celebrated the feast of our Holy Father Savvas the Sanctified at his Holy Monastery in the Judea desert, by the bank of brook Cedron, which leads to the Dead Sea.
This old and respectable Monastery was founded by Saint Savvas himself, in A.D. 500. Saint Savvas came to the Holy Land from his hometown Moutalaski of Cappadocia at the age of 18, became a novice under the obedience of Saint Euthymius the Great and his co-ascetic Saint Theoktistos, and later on founded the Lavra that bears his name.
He founded the Monastery as a Lavra community, for advanced Monks who had already received their training in a Coenobitic Monastery. Saint Savvas founded another ten Monasteries around Palestine and became a great spiritual father in all of them, leader of thousands of Monks and laity and at the same time fervent and brave supporter, along with Saint Theodosios the Cenobiarch, of the decisions of the 4
