Rockin With Lou, fresh from her upset win in last week’s Kirk Breed Pace, looks to close out the Cal Expo meet in style in Sunday’s featured $7,200 Filly and Mare Open Pace.
The main event is slated as the fifth on a nine-race card with first post at 5:25 p.m. The program will bring the Watch and Wager LLC meeting to an end with mandatory payouts for all wagers.
Rockin With Lou is a four-year-old daughter of Sweet Lou and the Rocknroll Hanover mare Ram Rocker who is owned, trained and driven by Gerry Longo. She is gunning for her 10th win from 28 lifetime trips to the post.
Bergen County sheriff candidate Robert Kugler is embarking on a road few other New Jersey politicians have trod: seeking office while charged with a crime.
Attorney General Gurbir Grewal alleged earlier this month that Kugler, the Saddle Brook police chief, ordered illegal police escorts for customers of his funeral home. Saddle Brook suspended him, but that didn t stop Bergen County Republicans from endorsing Kugler for sheriff on Tuesday.
Running for office while facing criminal charges is not a uniquely New Jersey phenomenon. Illinois Democrat Dan Rostenkowski sought reelection after he was indicted in 1994 (he lost, then pleaded guilty to mail fraud). Staten Island Republican Michael Grimm triumphed at the polls in 2014 after getting hit with tax evasion and perjury charges (Grimm resigned after pleading guilty to tax fraud).
When Fear Factor got the job done in last Sunday’s second race at Cal Expo, Wendi Wiener admits it was like getting a jump start on her love of harness racing.
The six-year-old son of Always A Virgin, who is co-owned by Wendi and trainer Nathalie Tremblay, was making his first appearance on the year with Nick Roland guiding him to the two and a quarter-length score.
“Since my husband Stu passed, I’ve just been racing our homebreds, and after Lilbitofmama retired I really though I was done,” Wendi related. “It just didn’t feel the same anymore. We know racing is in our blood and we just can’t quit, but I felt I would.”
Allmyxsliventexas, perfect in three starts at the current Cal-Expo meet since returning west from Chicago, looks to keep the streak going in Sunday night’s (Jan. 3) featured $7,200 Open Pace.
Watch and Wager LLC will present 12 races with first post set for 4:55 p.m. PST, and the main event will go as the eighth event on the evening.
A now eight-year-old homebred son of Hi Ho Silverheels, Allmyxsliventexas carries the banner of Wayne and Rod Knittel and is conditioned by Bob Johnson.
He has been assigned the outside post in the field of 10, which also includes his highly-regarded stablemate Proof, who will leave just to his inside in the No. 9 slot.
