Kalamazoo City Commissioners weigh returning to in-person meetings

Kalamazoo City Commissioners weigh returning to in-person meetings By Will Kriss Jul 7, 2021 | 7:32 PM KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County Commissioners plan to resume face to face meetings in early August, but Kalamazoo City Commissioners have delayed a decision on the question. City Staff had recommended they end their zoom meetings in two weeks, but at a virtual meeting Tuesday, Commissioners said they aren’t ready. Vice Mayor Patrese Griffin and Commissioner Erin Knott wonder what the plans are for their advisory boards, and say there are still concerns about safety. “Whether that be because they don’t feel safe showing up, or because they have have families and lives and so on and can’t be here,” Vice Mayor Griffin said.

Trans Michiganders no longer need proof of sex-reassignment surgery to change birth certificates

Credit Sharon McCutcheon / Unsplash Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued an opinion calling Michigan s requirement of proof of sex-reassignment surgery to change the gender on an individual s birth certificate unconstitutional. This comes after Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director, Elizabeth Hertel, made a formal request for the Attorney General s opinion regarding the issue in February.  Previously, the only way a transgender person could change the sex designation on their birth certificate was with an affadavit from a physician certifying that sex-reassignment surgery had been performed. Nessel said that this requirement created a discriminatory double standard for trans people.
