Local health officials said the COVID-19 surge has yet to show signs of slowing down or plateauing, as the area region continues to grapple with increasing new daily cases and a spike in deaths.
By Thursday, St. Clair County was approaching 5,000 active cases and 1,800 new reported cases added to its total in the last week. There have also been 23 coronavirus deaths reported since last week roughly the same number of deaths reported by the county in all of March.
Meanwhile, the area’s major hospitals are continuing to see high numbers of patients with COVID. According to the county’s data dashboard, 41.8% of all inpatient hospital beds in the county are occupied by COVID patients, a rate that is also a new high.

A suspect in a felonious assault case tried to flee a hospital after ramming another vehicle with her own, according to the Port Huron Police Department.
Shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, police officers responded to the area of Gillett and 11th streets for a report of a property damage accident, Port Huron Police Lt. Jeremy Young said.
Officers encountered conflicting stories between the parties. After reviewing video from a neighbor s home, officers determined a 25-year-old Port Huron woman drove her vehicle head-on into another vehicle, which held a 24-year-old man and 20-year-old woman, both Port Huron residents, Young said.

Three Spectrum Health hospitals were among 18 recipients of patient safety awards.
In observing National Patient Safety Awareness Week, the Economic Alliance for Michigan (EAM) announced the recipients of the 2021 EAM Hospital Patient Safety Awards, recognizing hospitals in Michigan consistently performing high marks and improvements in patient safety and quality of care. This marks the sixth year for the awards.
Spectrum Health Big Rapids, Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville and Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital were the three hospitals representing West Michigan on the list.

PORT HURON, Mich. – Two 21-year-old men
have been charged after an argument over a vehicle led to the stabbing of a 37-year-old man in Port Huron, officials said.
Port Huron police said a 37-year-old Burtchville Township man arrived at the Lake Huron Medical Center at 8:11 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 24). The man had multiple stab wounds, police said.
He told police that he had gotten into an argument with Devin Michael Convery, 21, of Port Huron, in the 1600 block of Jay Street, according to authorities. They were arguing about a vehicle, the man said.
