Fire restrictions are coming as Arizona approaches the 2021 summer wildfire season.
Campfire and smoking restrictions take effect at 8 a.m. Friday, May 7, in Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in eastern Arizona. It includes popular recreation areas near Heber-Overgaard, Show Low, Greer and Eagar-Springerville.
This move will reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during periods of high fire danger and elevated fire weather conditions, according to the Department of Agriculture.
This means campfires will only be allowed in metal grills and metal fire pits in designated campgrounds and picnic areas. Smoking is only permitted in a vehicle, building or three-foot area cleared of all flammable materials, the announcement says.
