There’s a new athletic director coming to Lake Michigan Catholic Schools, and it’s someone you may know. Phil McDonald of WSJM Sports will start with the district as the AD next week. McDonald has been with WSJM for more than 35 years. You’ll still hear him on the air in some roles, like hosting the Saturday morning Coaches Show. He’s a Lake Michigan Catholic graduate. Also this week, Lake Michigan Catholic announced its new head football coach is Pete Murphy, who was defensive coordinator for the LMC varsity football. He’ll lead the Twin City Sharks Football program, the three-way, co-op among LMC, Michigan Lutheran High School and Countryside Academy. LMC Middle/High School Principal James White says the district is “thrilled to be bringing on two amazing individuals with diverse experience to our athletic program.”

Some eighth grade students from Lake Michigan Catholic Schools will be taking part in the National History Day competition next month. Teacher Ginger Hysell tells WSJM News Lila Baliunas, Hannah Hysell, Josephine Marsh, and Mary Riley won their category at the state level last month with a performance exploring how Diego Rivera’s “Man at the Crossroads” controversy with the Rockefellers, as well as Russia’s 1959 tour of the Bolshoi Ballet in America, show different aspects of the role of art as propaganda during the cold war. Hannah Hysell told us more about the upcoming event.
“The National History Day competition is basically a competition between students from around the country, and some international students, and you submit a historical project that is based off of research and is submitted in many different mediums,” Hysell said.
