(Enterprise photo â Elizabeth Izzo) SARANAC LAKE The strange 2021 Winter Carnival is over now, and Saranac Lake village workers demolished the Ice Palace on Tuesday. Though the COVID-19 pandemic hampered many Carnival traditions and events this year, Saranac Lakers found a way to celebrate virtually, in real life and in alternative ways.

Feb 01, 2021 Work is underway in Saranac Lake to build the ice palace for the 2021 Winter Carnival, which begins Friday, Feb. 5 and runs through Sunday, Feb. 14.
Last weekend, volunteers in Saranac Lake worked in temperatures around 5 degrees to stack blocks of ice to build the palace structures.

The theme of the 2021 Winter Carnival is Mask-erade. In a year like no other, a Winter Carnival like no other, reads the event s webpage. Doonesbury artist and Saranac Lake native Garry Trudeau designed buttons for the carnival.

Each Winter Carnival has a queen, king, and royal court. Members of this year s royal court volunteered over the weekend, filling buckets of water from Lake Flower and mixed them with snow. That icy combination is then used to patch holes and bind blocks of ice together.
