Though the COVID-19 pandemic hampered many Carnival traditions and events this year, Saranac Lakers found a way to celebrate virtually, in real life and in alternative ways.

Photos: Volunteers brave the cold to build the ice palace in Saranac Lake

Feb 01, 2021 Work is underway in Saranac Lake to build the ice palace for the 2021 Winter Carnival, which begins Friday, Feb. 5 and runs through Sunday, Feb. 14. Last weekend, volunteers in Saranac Lake worked in temperatures around 5 degrees to stack blocks of ice to build the palace structures. Members of this year s royal court volunteered over the weekend, filling buckets of water from Lake Flower and mixed them with snow. That icy combination is then used to patch holes and bind blocks of ice together.
