SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Twenty South Tahoe High School students who served as mentors in the inaugural Connect, Engage, Succeed program this school year were awarded $12,500 in scholarships from the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation (LTEF).
LTEF partnered with the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) to identify and train volunteer high school coaches/mentors and match them with elementary and middle school students who were struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic distance learning format.
Mentors enrolled in an online LTCC class to learn how to coach younger students and were then paired with a cohort of 2nd-8th graders. They met remotely to provide individualized tutoring and social/emotional support. Retired teachers, such as LTEF board member Bob Comlossy, volunteered to give advice to the student coaches.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Twenty-nine employees with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be retiring this year, taking with them over 700 years of combined service in education.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Despite challenges presented by the pandemic, the philanthropic leadership organization Tahoe Women’s Community Fund had a successful year supporting local nonprofits.
TWCF also virtually recruited the most memberships to date for its sixth year running, even without in-person events, marking a total of 226 members for 2021.
TWCF also raised $100,000 with a generous donation from the “Angel of Tahoe” Lisa Maloff to distribute to South Shore nonprofits this year.
On Monday, Feb. 15, grant applications will open to nonprofits that serve the South Shore. The process closes at 5 p.m. sharp on Thursday, March 11.
Even though 2020 created uncertainty for many organizations, it did not negatively affect TWCF.
