Meals on Wheels of Polk County Inc. urgently needs more Polk County residents to volunteer their time to deliver meals to homebound people during the late spring and summer after the departure of the “snowbird” drivers.
Residents who own a car, possess a valid driver’s license and have proof of insurance are eligible to drive routes for Meals on Wheels. A typical volunteer driver delivers meals to between eight and 16 people per day, Executive Director Susan Eldridge said in a news release.
Drivers pick up meals for their routes most weekdays at Meals on Wheels headquarters at 620 Sixth St. in Winter Haven around 10 a.m. and finish by noon, Eldridge said. Drivers are needed for routes in all areas of Polk County served by Meals on Wheels, including Winter Haven, Auburndale, Lake Alfred, Dundee, Haines City, Lake Hamilton, Davenport and parts of Lakeland.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A popular Winter Haven restaurant is closed after fire ripped through the building as employees prepared to open Sunday morning.
According to the Winter Haven Fire Department, it was just before 9 a.m. when crews were called to Floridino’s Italian Kitchen along 6th Street NW, at the entrance to Spring Lake Square. Arriving firefighters reported heavy smoke was pouring from the building.
Because the flames were spreading quickly, firefighters called for help from other city crews, as well as those from Polk County Fire, Auburndale Fire, and Lake Alfred Fire.
