Six months quickly turned into 34 years of Forest City Emergency Response service for Mark Haugen.
Haugen moved to Forest City from Albert Lea, Minnesota, in 1983 and began working in the electrodeposition paint shop at Winnebago Industries. There he met his wife, Sandy, whom he married the same year. He always wanted to be involved in the community, and Winnebago co-worker Gail Reese convinced him to join the Emergency Medical Services staff.
âI wanted to get involved with the community, so I told her I would drive only for six months,â Haugen said. âThe more you learn, the more you want to learn, and before you know it 34 years has gone by.â

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate presented 2021 Carrie Chapman Catt Awards to both Charles City High School and Carrie Lane High School Tuesday. The award was presented at the girlhood home of Catt located just south of Charles City and goes to any school that registers at least 90% of eligible students to vote.
In Iowa, a 17-year-old can register to vote if he or she will be the legal voting age of 18 at the time of the next election. This is the first time each school has earned the Carrie Chapman Catt Award.
Carrie Lane Program Coordinator Donn Betts said, “Our school is named in honor of the woman suffragette whose childhood home is located in Charles City. Our students have close ties with the National 19th Amendment Society and serve at the Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Childhood Home and Museum during the year. Encouraging high school seniors to register to vote is a step toward creating compassionate competent problem-solving adults
