AUCTION: Atherton Library A LANDMARK former library is set to go under the hammer later this month. And auctioneers are expecting the old Atherton Library to fetch at least £100,000 at a Jamuary 20 sale. Library services were relocated from the Elizabeth Street building to the nearby Atherton Town Hall in 2018 following an extensive refurbishment. Bolton-based architects Bradshaw, Gass and Hope, the practice behind the Royal Exchange in Manchester and UMIST, was responsible for the red-brick 1905 edifice. In the early 20th century it s combined central heating and ventilation system and electric lights throughout were considered state-of-the-art. Auctioneers Pugh s say the old library is in need of a complete refurbishment as it is “in a dilapidated condition, having been vacant for a number of years and suffered from water ingress”.
