COVID-19 in Siskiyou: Here s what s causing the spike in cases
Siskiyou Daily News
The Siskiyou County Public Health Department is investigating the causes for the recent rise in positive cases, but they re thought to be the result of workplace exposure, family case clusters, and community transmission, said department spokesperson Angelica Cook.
Siskiyou County is a hotspot for COVID-19 in the state. According to the latest data at the California Blueprint for a Safer Economy, updated on May 11, Siskiyou County is experiencing 25 new COVID-19 cases per day (per 100,000 residents) and a positivity rate of 14.7%. Statewide, the positivity rate is 1.2% and there are 3.7 new cases identified per day per 100,000 residents.
The clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 1,000 doses are being made available, although slots are filling steadily since the clinic was announced Wednesday afternoon.
A total of 7,630 Siskiyou residents have received a two-dose vaccine, public health representative Jonathan Himbert told the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday morning, representing about 18% of the population. He said he s expecting a big surge after the April 15 clinic.
Siskiyou County moved to the less restrictive orange COVID-19 reopening tier on Wednesday, and active cases have dropped dramatically over the past month. As of Tuesday evening, the public health department reported just five active cases on its COVID-19 information dashboard, down from 41 on March 1. Siskiyou County reached its peak of active coronavirus cases in January, when it reached 114 on Jan. 8.

The state s latest evaluation on Tuesday shows that Siskiyou County is experiencing 9.4 new cases of COVID-19 per day and has a positivity rate of 7.3%. California moves its counties through a tiered reopening system – the Blueprint for a Safer Economy – using these metrics.
Siskiyou County has been in the most restrictive purple, or widespread tier since November of 2020, even as all surrounding North State counties have recently progressed to the red substantial tier.
In order to move to the red tier, which would allow bars to reopen and restaurants to serve customers indoors, the county needs its case rate to drop from the current 9.4 to below 7. The county s 7.3% positivity rate is low enough to move to the red tier, said Siskiyou County Public Health Information Officer Angelica Cook.
