California faces a reckoning in how it regulates for-profit colleges and trade schools at a time when more students are turning to an educational industry with a long history of fraud allegations.
The Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, the troubled state agency charged with policing and licensing those schools, is scheduled for what is shaping up as a contentious legislative oversight hearing next week, with lawmakers calling for robust changes in how it operates.
“The bureau is in need of significant improvements at a time when students are suffering immensely” in economic changes brought on by the global pandemic, Assemblyman David Chiu, D-San Francisco, told EdSource. “Everything is on the table.”

An ancient bone from a dog, discovered in a cave in southeast Alaska, hints at when and how humans entered the Americas at the end of the Ice Age.
The bone, just the fragment of a femur, comes from a dog that lived about 10,150 years ago, based on radiocarbon dating. That makes this dog fossil one of the oldest, or possibly the oldest, found in the Americas, researchers report in the Feb. 24

16/18), suggests that the dog belonged to a lineage of dogs that split from Siberian dogs around 16,700 years ago. The timing of that split suggests that the dog’s ancestors, probably following along with humans, had left Asia by around that time.

For about 20 years, specimen PP-00128 in the earth sciences collection of the University of Alaska Museum was thought to belong to a rather old bear. The femur fragment, small enough to hold between two fingers, had been excavated from a site along the southeastern Alaskan coast where archaeologists also uncovered the remains of fish, birds, mammals, and humans going back thousands of years.
