EL CENTRO â Not long after Los Angeles reinstated its indoor mask mandate, Imperial County health officials issued a statement recommending residents here do the same.
Although the recommendation has not risen to the level of a local health order yet, Imperial County Public Health Department is concerned about a statewide rise in COVID-19 cases.
The department said that over the past week, California has averaged 2,678 new cases and 23 new deaths per day.
â Due to the statewide increase in COVID-19 cases, the Imperial County health officer (Dr. Stephen Munday), as a proactive and precautionary measure, strongly recommends the use of masks/face coverings indoors in Imperial County, regardless of vaccination status,â the health department said in a release.

IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Imperial County Public Health Department says there are currently two COVID-19 Delta variants in the Valley. But right now, local health leaders are more concerned with the Gamma and Alpha variants.
There are currently 90 cases of the Gamma variant and 68 cases of the Alpha variant in Imperial County. The number of Delta variant cases remains low at this time, but there is still concern.
Often overshadowed by its larger, more affluent neighbors to the west, Imperial County had few testing and vaccination resources early on. Now, flush with vaccines, groups in the county are taking targeted efforts to reach vulnerable communities.
