PUPILS at a school in Ilminster took part in a public speaking competition last week. Judges from Ilminster Rotary, Owen Paterson and Kirsty Hughes, chose two winners from Greenfylde C of E First School in their Young Voices competition. There were nine finalists from Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. During the competition, the children spoke for two minutes about growing up during the coronavirus pandemic. Claire Oaten, headteacher at the school, said the children showed “expression and confidence” during their speeches. “There were some thoughtful and often very personal, special memories and feelings as well,” she said. “All of the youngsters provided the adults watching with much to think about and the children showed no nerves in presenting on screen in this virtual competition.”
