Crews fully contain 35-acre brush fire off Corkscrew Rd in Lee County Published: April 14, 2021 4:06 PM EDT Updated: April 14, 2021 5:43 PM EDT Recommended Estero Fire Rescue led the response to a large brush fire in southeast Lee County Wednesday afternoon. According to the fire rescue Facebook post, the fire reached approximately 35 acres and was 100% contained as of 5 p.m. The scene was in the area of 23971 Corkscrew Rd, which is roughly 7 miles east of the Corkscrew intersection with Alico Road. No structures were reportedly in danger due to the fire at this time, and there were no injuries involved. Florida Forest Service was also at the scene with tractor units and an aircraft unit helping to survey and contain the fire.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed via Facebook that it was assisting the Florida Highway Patrol with traffic control at Corkscrew Road and Veranda Village Boulevard after a crash with injuries. According to the FHP, the crash involved a semi-truck hauling sod and two passenger cars. The road remains blocked while tow trucks head to the scene, and the crash is still being investigated. Estero Fire Rescue reported the two other involved drivers were not injured, and cautioned people to be more careful when driving through heavy fog.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says they responded to The Harborage community off US-41 after the report came in around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The FWC says a 10-foot personal watercraft was being used on a private lake inside the community when 47-year-old Richard Brent Toms was thrown into the water and didn’t resurface. Dive crews with the FWC and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office searched for Toms and found his body Sunday afternoon. Using The sheriff’s office’s SONAR equipped drone and FWC equipment, authorities were able to recover the body.
