Office alternatives: Remote workers flock to cafes, bars and hotels rather than co-working spaces

With pandemic restrictions loosened, many people are turning to hotels, cafes and bars as an alternative to co-working spaces and offices giving a much-needed boost to he hospitality sector. These so-called “third spaces” are growing in popularity for people who crave some kind of buzz and atmosphere while they work, but aren’t yet ready for office, or even co-working environments. Researchers from the Business School at City University of London, and Goldsmiths, University of London, visited 36 different venues in London, including coffee houses, pubs, hotel bars, churches, museums, libraries and train stations to conduct in-depth interviews with customers who regularly work from such spaces.

One Maryland lawmaker wants to change the way several rural counties elect their commissioners, arguing that those counties’ current systems disenfranchise people of color. In five counties – St. Mary’s, Charles, Calvert, Queen Anne’s and Garrett – commissioners are elected by a countywide vote, regardless of what district they’re from. Del. Brian M. Crosby (D-St. Mary’s) called that system “anti-democratic” at a House Ways and Means Committee meeting Tuesday.

Sarah Ekstrom, who has been WPC’s controller since joining the company in 2015, has been promoted to vice president of accounting. Ekstrom has 30 years of experience in finance, accounting, information technology, human resources, and legal and business operations, working with assets totaling more than $1 billion.
