Three local college presidents are among only 13 nationwide to be recognized last week for leadership in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion by the Assoc. of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and the education-technology company Cengage.

Holyoke Community College President Christina Royal, Greenfield Community College President Yves Salomon-Fernández, and Elms College President Harry Dumay were among that select group of 13 to receive the AAC&U-Cengage Inclusion Scholarship, which recognizes college and university presidents whose outstanding leadership to advance liberal education has resulted in reduced equity gaps, improved inclusion and belonging for minority students, and reformed hiring practices to promote greater diversity.

Dozens of seniors throughout the county expressed frustration and anger this week as COVID-19 vaccination slots opened up to people 65 years old and older, and as many of them tried to register, they found the state website where people sign up for all vaccine locations had crashed.
The Greenfield Recorder reporter received more than a dozen calls Thursday from some of those seniors who said they’d been trying to register for the vaccine for days, even before the 65-plus announcement on Wednesday, and could not get an appointment.

WEST SPRINGFIELD – After 10 years of service within the city, Carly Camossi has been named the chief of operations for West Springfield.
Camossi, who has worked as a the city’s outreach coordinator for five years, will continue to organize and oversee all community-based needs surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, and beyond.
Over the past several months, she has organized the logistics for COVID-19 testing sites, and continuously assists with setting up appointments for residents who need the vaccine.
The new role she finds herself in is very similar to what she has been performing as outreach coordinator over the past five years.
Buckland-Shelburne Elementary names new principal

SHELBURNE FALLS Hayley Gilmore, assistant principal of Buckland-Shelburne Elementary School, will begin her transition this month into the role of principal.
Gilmore will fill the shoes of Principal Joanne Giguere, who announced her retirement in November, according to Mohawk Trail Regional School District Communications Director Carla Potts. Giguere who has served the district for 19 years and Gilmore will co-principal through February, until Gilmore assumes the role on March 1.
According to Potts, Gilmore was one of six candidates from the original applicant pool to be interviewed during the principal search, which began after Giguere announced her plans to retire. From there, she was selected as one of two finalists.
