Reverse attacks on voting
Like many of my fellow Americans, I am frustrated with the roadblocks put up by Republicans in Congress that prevent even starting a conversation on critical pieces of legislation. I’m frustrated with the GOP’s relentless attack on our basic rights, including our freedom to vote. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, 17 states have enacted 28 new laws this year that make it more difficult for eligible Americans to cast their ballots.
But I certainly haven’t lost hope or my determination. Right now, legislators are considering two crucial bills, the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Together, these bills would create national standards for voting and stop unjust and unfair voting laws. These bills are exactly what we need to reverse the worst attacks on our voting rights that we’ve seen in years.

Proposed Hanover budget balances need for services with needs of taxpayers
At the business portion of Hanover’s Town Meeting on Tuesday, voters will face a bevy of appropriations-related warrant articles, $30.6 million in total, for fiscal year 2022. After revenues, the levy to taxpayers is $14.1 million. Tax rates, incorporating the Fire Fund, would increase just under 3% (17 cents on a base of $5.92 per assessed value of $1,000 prior to the increase). The Hanover Finance Committee voted unanimously on March 8 to support the town budget.
In setting the budget, the town faced significant, mostly externally driven, revenue and cost pressures: Multiple revenue streams were impacted by COVID-19 totaling more than $450,000 an amount equal to 19 cents on the tax rate; cost drivers included a nearly $200,000 increase in required

SALEM TOWNSHIP Residents pushed trustees on two fronts Tuesday, for not applying for CARES Act money and for continuing to remain status quo on Constable Dan Valentine.
“You guys are just going to sweep it under the table?” Joe Briceland asked.
Briceland was referring to documents provided to trustees at the previous meeting related to Valentine resigning from the Beaver Township Police Department two years ago.
The documents outlined an internal affairs investigation into allegations of workplace sexual harassment, according to pages provided to the Salem News. Valentine wasn’t charged with anything related to the allegations, with no cases found in Mahoning County court online records.
