Mayor, city leaders recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Elkhart
The event was organized by the Elkhart Chapter of the Indiana Black Expo.
They gathered to reflect upon Dr. King’s legacy and remind one another that the work continues, the city of Elkhart said.
Monday from 3-5 p.m. you can drop off coats, winter wear, non-perishable food, household goods, etc., at the Tolson Center to benefit Guidance Ministries and Elkhart Community Schools.
“Grateful to have the legacy of Dr. King to guide us during these trying times. We know this too shall pass, so long as we work hard to preserve unity and remember that more ties us together than pulls us apart,” Mayor Roberson said.
Cedric Rollins doesnât rely on a temperature gauge on his smokers. Instead, the Elkhart pitmaster determines the temperature of his barbecue simply by touch and sight.
âI feel my smoker, I see how much smoke is seeping out and how fast itâs seeping out,ââ he said. âAnd I just know how the cooking is going.â
Learning how to smoke barbecue is somewhat of a family affair with Rollins initially learning the trade from his father. Beginning in 2008, the duo would temporarily set up in the parking lot at Advance Auto Parts along Cassopolis Street and, in 2014, Rollins took over full time once his father moved from the area.
