La Junta City Council receives fund for historic surveys, building analyses

LA Junta Tribune La Junta economic development and urban renewal director Cynthia Nieb informed city council at the Monday evening meeting that the La Junta Urban Renewal Certified Local Government received $24,975 in an El Pomar Foundation grant for a historic resource survey of the downtown area. The survey is intended to provide context and insight into the history of downtown La Junta, including its buildings and commercial and cultural history. The Certified Local Government will match $5,000 for the survey as well, Nieb said. The economic development director said the survey will inform city officials who owned what buildings when and for what reasons, which will help recapture historical context that informs one of how La Junta came to be where it is today.

Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce President Rod Slyhoff dead at 66

Rod Slyhoff, the longtime Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce president who spent decades championing Pueblo and its businesses, died Monday at 66 years old. He had a heart condition. Slyhoff began working for the chamber in 1988 and became its president in 1994 after he’d previously served as vice president of membership and small business development, membership director and account representative. He was known throughout Pueblo as one of the city s fiercest advocates and greatest boosters and oversaw a period of unprecedented growth and expansion for the chamber. As its head, chamber membership grew from 800 to more than 1,300. In October, Slyhoff and the chamber reached an agreement that would have seen him continue as its leader through 2024, at which point he said he was “very happy to continue to serve Pueblo and our business community.”
