La Junta economic development and urban renewal director Cynthia Nieb informed city council at the Monday evening meeting that the La Junta Urban Renewal Certified Local Government received $24,975 in an El Pomar Foundation grant for a historic resource survey of the downtown area.
The survey is intended to provide context and insight into the history of downtown La Junta, including its buildings and commercial and cultural history. The Certified Local Government will match $5,000 for the survey as well, Nieb said.
The economic development director said the survey will inform city officials who owned what buildings when and for what reasons, which will help recapture historical context that informs one of how La Junta came to be where it is today.
