QUESTION
To ask the Minister for Transport the status of the Fota Road in Cobh, County Cork; and if funding will be allocated to upgrade same.
REPLY
The improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads is the statutory responsibility of the relevant local authority in accordance with the provisions of Section 13 of the Roads Act 1993. Works on those roads are funded from the Council’s own resources supplemented by State road grants.
The extent of the cutbacks in grant funding during the post 2008 recession meant that grant funding for road improvement schemes had to be curtailed because expenditure on maintenance/renewal was falling well short of what was required to adequately maintain the regional and local road network.

The motion was put forward by Green Party councillor, Oliver Moran, who said the system should be similar to the one in place for flood warnings in the city:
“Especially now during COVID, there are more people going for walks outdoors with their families. Over the Christmas period, I was out for a walk with my son and he noticed the air thick with pollution. I found my throat tickling too.
“Cork City Council has collaborated with UCC to place a network of air quality monitors across the city. I checked online when I got home and, sure enough, the air quality monitors showed it was worst where we had been walking.

“…the botched Brexit deal amounts to a cut of at least 25 per cent in quota and income for the Irish fishing fleet at a time when the sector is already in survival mode” – says Vocal TD
Independent West Cork Michael Collins has slammed the government for abandoning the fishing sector and coastal communities in a Brexit trade-off which destroys the Irish fishing sector while costing thousands of jobs in rural coastal communities.
Speaking from his Cork South West Constituency today Deputy Collins stated:
“The ramifications of the Brexit trade deal will soon be felt in every coastal community as the Irish fishing industry… has been hit hardest by the deal. In effect, the Irish fishing sector has been thrown under the proverbial bus, while the Irish government watch on like bystanders instead of protecting our interests.”
