Now 82, Cowlin first moved into the street when she was 24 and newly married. They bought the first rabbits a few years after her husband passed away. Now, she says sheâll never leave the property â the house has too many memories.

RICKY WILSON/Stuff Lewis has been a tenant of, and full-time helper to, Cowlin for 11 years. He said he is extremely disappointed by the decision. The original plan was for the property to be a community farm and bring joy to the neighbourhood, he said.

The colony grew from just four rabbits bought at a pet store Since the decision was handed down, the pair has had about 200 rabbits euthanised. They have just under a month to get rid of about 100 more. The SPCA is helping to rehome them, with some finding new owners as far afield as Tauranga.
