Work will involve repairing the aging seawall and raising it by around 1.5 metres to protect from rising sea levels and storm surges. The work is estimated to cost around $8.1 million. The federal government has already committed $3.2 million toward the refurbishments. Lisa Caissie, a spokesperson for the city, said they remain optimistic that provincial funding will be announced “soon.” “The refurbishment of the seawall and the development of the Fundy Quay site is a catalytic project that the City looks forward to seeing move forward,” Caissie said in an email.

Saint John Issues RFP For Fundy Quay Work

Fundy Quay site. Image: Submitted, Develop Saint John. Saint John is seeking engineering proposals for redevelopment work at the Fundy Quay site on the city’s waterfront. The request for proposals is similar to one issued last July, but with some changes to the scope and requirements. Work would involve contaminated soil remediation, including the removal of underground storage tanks, and site re-grading. RFP documents show the soil remediation and site re-grading is estimated to cost as much as $6.6 million. “The overall project is targeted for tender and construction in late summer of 2021,” said the documents. But the request for proposals hinges on the city obtaining provincial and federal funding before the end of March.

But even in smaller markets like Saint John, how, if at all, COVID-19 will change the office and commercial market is still unclear.
