Ntsako Manganyi’s treatment was already disrupted by the pandemic’s restrictions. Just a day before she was due for life-saving cancer surgery, Ntsako Manganyi tested positive for COVID-19.  With the surgery postponed, the 33-year-old had to come to terms with fighting two potentially fatal illnesses breast cancer and the coronavirus.  “The experience was a bit scary for me as I was scared of dying, considering the number of people who died of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic in the country and some of them did not even have any of the chronic illness,” said Manganyi.

Doctors at Elim Hospital diagnosed Baloyi in 2019. At home in Bungeni village outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, she found a lump on the right side of her breast that would not go away. “Prior to my cancer diagnoses, I felt a huge lump on my right breast for few weeks, but the lump was painless, and I never thought that it might be something serious. But, realising that the pain was not going anywhere, I decided to seek medical attention,” said Baloyi. Baloyi, now 39, still remembers the day she was diagnosed with breast cancer like it was yesterday. “I discovered my worst fear on the 17th of April in 2019, when they told me that I have stage three breast cancer. By that time, I had very little knowledge of what breast cancer was and how it is treated. I was so scared and thought that I was going to die, that’s the thought which came to my mind the moment they broke the diagnosis to me,” she said.

Image: Supplied A nurse was killed on her way to work at Elim Hospital after an allegedly drunk minibus taxi driver crashed into her car in Limpopo. Provincial health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba said sister Susan Mulaudi on her way to save lives during a public holiday died on at the scene of the crash on Day of Goodwill. Ramathuba said the taxi driver had allegedly spent the night at a local tavern.   “It is alleged that the taxi driver, aged 26, together with other four occupants [of the taxi] were from . a tavern at Hamasakona village where they spent the entire night drinking alcohol. The taxi is from Gauteng and is back home for the festive season,” said Ramathuba.
