Dozens of parents and children are calling on Merton Council to reconsider and keep Lavender Nursery open. Some parents and children put up ‘Save Our Nursery’ signs outside the nursery. And due to the lockdown, instead of gathering in protest at the site in London Road, others took pictures of themselves with their homemade signs. The council says there has been an increase in secondary school children with mental health problems. Some of the most vulnerable are educated at Melbury College which is based in a temporary home in Morden. The council is looking to move the specialist educator to the site of Lavender Nursery in London Road.
Merton Council set to help feed children this Christmas - PA Merton Council has announced that they are extending their food voucher scheme in a bid to help families over the Christmas break. Food vouchers worth £40 are to be provided for around 8,000 Merton children, to ensure no child goes hungry over the two-week Christmas school holiday. Merton Council has now launched its Covid-19 Winter Grant scheme which builds upon footballer Marcus Rashford’s campaign, to fund lunches during the school holidays for children who rely on free school meals. The council has extended the funding to cover pre-school children, who would qualify for free school meals, as well as care leavers who are living independently and young carers.
