Townend Challenge riders remember Christian and Niggy

LOTS of cyclists braved bad weather and took part in the 10th Team Townend cycle sportive at the weekend - in memory of two much-loved Cockermouth brothers. The popular event had been held every year - pre Covid - following the deaths of Christian, 29, and Niggy, 21, Townend, who died in a road crash whilst out cycling in 2010. Last year s special anniversary event had to be cancelled as a result of the pandemic. The event is organised, marshalled and catered for by a hardworking team of family and friends. Simon Farrell said: It was great to see a lot of familiar faces as well as plenty of riders new to the event who were no doubt attracted by the new 66 miles Dirty Double route, which takes in Whinlatter, Newlands and Honister from both directions.

Many customers including third level students will not feel the loss of the X12 Expressway until college and normal life after Covid restrictions end. The decision by the national transport company to end its cross country service, to concentrate on cities, was announced last September with the final date announced only last week. The decision was a financial one. “Expressway’s X12 service between Dublin and Limerick has incurred unsustainable losses due to the impact of Covid-19”, said Eleanor Farrell, Chief Commercial Officer, Bus Éireann.
