Facebook steps up censorship: People can no longer have online conversations without potentially getting censored

The social media giant reportedly censored discussion of gardening tools in a group about gardening. “Facebook’s censors are digging deep – flagging the word ‘hoe’ in a western New York gardening group because they apparently confused the tool for a disparaging term for women,” the  New York Post reported. A group called WNY Gardeners has been repeatedly flagged by Facebook for “violating community standards” when its more than 7,500 members discussed the long-handled gardening tool – which is spelled with an “e,” unlike the offensive term. When one member commented “Push pull hoe!” on a post about preferred weeding tools, Facebook sent a notification that read: “We reviewed this comment and found it goes against our standards for harassment and bullying.”

No hoe on Facebook: Company algorithms tag gardening tool

Facebook s algorithms sometimes flag this particular word as “violating community standards. Author: BARBARA ORTUTAY AP Technology Writer Published: 8:01 PM EDT July 21, 2021 Updated: 8:01 PM EDT July 21, 2021 Moderating a Facebook gardening group in western New York is not without challenges. There are complaints of wooly bugs, inclement weather and the novice members who insist on using dish detergent on their plants. And then there s the word “hoe.” Facebook s algorithms sometimes flag this particular word as “violating community standards, apparently referring to a different word, one without an “e at the end that is nonetheless often misspelled as the garden tool. Normally, Facebook s automated systems will flag posts with offending material and delete them. But if a group s members or worse, administrators violate the rules too many times, the entire group can get shut down.
