A pair of KCII area boys basketball teams played a defensive grinder Saturday at Highland High School as the visiting Hillcrest Ravens scored a 41-36 win over the Huskies. The game was back and forth most of the day, with Highland leading 12-7 after the first eight minutes, and the Ravens countering in the second period 19-11 to take a 26-23 lead into the half. Out of the break, Hillcrest would score just one point in the third quarter, but the Huskies were limited to just six as both defenses dug in and Highland took a 29-27 lead to the fourth. Early in the fourth quarter, the Ravens got their only field goal of the second half, an Eli Ours baseline jumper. The Raven defense and foul shooting was enough to keep Highland at bay down the stretch. It’s an all-KCII area matchup Saturday afternoon in Riverside when the Hillcrest Academy Raven boys basketball team travels to meet the Highland Huskies. The Ravens come into the game with an overall record of 7-5 after a 56-39 loss at Wapello on Friday night. In the loss, the Ravens were led by Eli Ours 17 points. On the year, Ours leads Hillcrest at 16 points per game, fourth in the Superconference North Division. He also has a team best five assists and three steals per contest. John Hughes leads the Ravens on the glass with five boards per game.
Highland comes in with an overall mark of 2-5, 2-3 in the Superconference North. For the second straight game, it was late heroics that lifted the Hillcrest Raven boys basketball team to victory as they took down Danville Saturday 51-49 at Hillcrest Union. Fresh off of a come-from-behind win at Winfield-Mt. Union by two on Friday, the Ravens would find themselves in need of late magic after Danville jumped out to a 16-12 lead after the first quarter. The Ravens hung around, down just two at half, 26-24 thanks to John Hughes 12 points before break. Out of the locker room, the Bears would keep the Ravens at arms length, taking a 42-36 lead into the fourth. The Ravens had a handful of possessions down just two, but were unable to tie or take the lead. Out of a timeout, the Bears reeled off eight straight to push their lead to 10 with around five minutes left. From there, the Ravens snapped into action.
