Yuji Naka no longer working at Square Enix

Industry veteran and co-creator of Sonic The Hedgehog Yuji Naka looks to have left Square Enix following the release of Balan Wonderworld. According to updates on his personal LinkedIn and Facebook pages, Naka wrapped up his tenure as a senior manager at the company on April 30. Naka led development on the adventure title Balan Wonderworld, which launched back in March. The game was received poorly by the press, amassing a Metacritic score of just 36%. Naka is best known as the former head of Sonic Team, where he also worked as the lead programmer of the original Sonic The Hedgehog. He later led development on other Sega titles such as Nights into Dreams, Burning Rangers and Phantasy Star Online.

Balan Wonderworld review: an archaic throwback as clumsy as it is enjoyable

Availability: Out now on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC Balan Wonderworld marks the grand return of Yuji Naka (an impeccably stylish dev, I was lucky enough to meet him once and was impressed how his socks, tie and pocket square all matched, a fact that might have been unremarkable were they not all a searingly bright orange). Here the Sonic the Hedgehog programmer is reunited with the designer of Sega s mascot Naoto Ohshima - a man who can also boast Nights into Dreams, Burning Rangers, and perhaps most appropriately this time out Blinx: The Time Sweeper on his CV. The two are together for the first time since 1998 s Sonic Adventure, a pairing that promises a certain type of game that Balan Wonderworld certainly delivers on.

Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?

My 9th grade English teacher read the Iliad to us, explaining words and phrases as he went along. It was an incredible experience. He also read Romeo and Juliet in the same way. I considered it a great gift to allow us to experience the truly great literature at that age, in a way that I think most of us could understand and appreciate. I think I would have liked this. I had a 6th grade teacher who read aloud to us daily, something more age appropriate, though, and this experience a remarkably large, and fond component of my recollection of those days. Unfortunately I was promoted right into an innovative program of individualized learning which ultimately crashed and burned in about 6 years, but consumed all of my middle school years. I didn t really encounter anything comparable again until high school

Review: Description: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 once again fuses the blobs and blocks of two popular puzzle games! What s new? What s not? What s inexplicably disappointing? Review: Pity the sequel to a perfectly good puzzle game. Its core idea is already established, appealing, and therefore limitlessly enjoyable. The sequel can only refine it, add to it, or broaden its player base with bonus modes. And it can t disrupt the balance of the original concept too much, unless it wants to stray into the gimmicks and meddling that lead to
