Sen. Mark Steffen, R-Hutchinson, testifies in support of his bill to prohibit employers from mandating COVID-19 vaccination for their employees.
TOPEKA Sen. Mark Steffen pushed colleagues Thursday to support his legislation banning employers from requiring workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19, saying lawmakers should reject the idea that society is more important than the individual.
Senate Bill 213 would prohibit employers from taking adverse action against employees who refuse the COVID-19 vaccine, and would impose a $1,000 fine for employers who violate the restriction. Steffen said this would preserve freedom of choice for individuals and relieve employers from the liability of imposing a medical procedure on an unwilling worker.
In a hearing on Feb. 9, the Kansas House Judiciary Committee considered a measure that would increase penalties for people who are found guilty of stealing multiple packages of mail.
House Bill 2229 would amend K.S.A. 2020 Supp. 21-5801, and increase the penalty for anyone who is caught stealing three or more packages in a 72 hour period to a severity level 9 personal felony regardless of the value of the stolen items, according to Natalie Scott, the Assistant Revisor of Statutes for the Judiciary Committee.
âMail includes anything sent through the United States Postal Service or another delivery service, so that s pretty open-ended there to include UPS, FedEx, any other delivery service, but it also includes any sealed article or thing addressed to a person,â Scott said.
Lawmakers are considering a move to bar employers from mandating vaccinations, an effort that experts believe has its roots in the anti-vaccine movement and comes as millions of Americans are getting inoculated against COVID-19.
Nursing home facilities in other states have required employees to get the vaccine because of their work with high-risk individuals, although there are no confirmed reports of workplaces taking that step in Kansas.
But vaccine requirements are usually most prevalent for other diseases, such as influenza or hepatitis. Restaurants will often require shots to keep diners safe and hospitals and day care facilities will do the same, especially if a worker is interacting with immunocompromised individuals.
